Kai Pacha: The Earth We Dwell is the second exhibition in my PhD trilogy, following Uku Pacha: The Inner World, presented in August 2023 at the University of Leeds. Inspired by my field trip to Peru, Uku Pacha explored the sacredness of lamoid within the Andean Mountain range. Fifteen months later, Kai Pacha expands from this cultural and ecological focus to explore the shared time-space between myself and other creatures. Over this period, Iβve worked in the UK, the Peruvian Andes, and mainland China, examining lamoid speciesβ roles in these cultures while undergoing personal and professional transitions. This journey has shaped my work into a more abstract and fluid exploration of our interconnected world.
Presented as a multimedia installation, Kai Pacha weaves insights from diverse contexts into a fictional yet grounded world. A centrepiece, Relic of Llamabamba, features 24 pseudo-artefacts I created in Peruβs Sacred Valley. Other elements include a vintage monitor triptych humorously referencing alpacasβ political symbolism among Chinese netizens, along with various multi-media works arranged to reflect the messy, layered nature of our shared existence. In Kai Pacha, I archive my recent work while constructing a fictional space that feels familiar, inviting viewers to reflect on shared connections with each other and other species.
